1978 Magnavision
Description
Magnavision was the first reflective optical video-disc player to be released to the general public on December 15, 1978. Initially available in 3 stores in Atlanta, Georgia, the product was not “mass marketed” until 1980. Other companies marketed similar units with varying names and specifications. Consumers were confused!
Philips and MCA finally formed LaserVision Association in order to clarify branding and specifications. With marketing an issue, Magnavox ceased production in 1982, with Pioneer Electronics of Japan taking over production.
